The mandatory implementation of serialization and QR codes will drastically improve the ability to verify the authenticity of medicines, significantly reducing the circulation of counterfeit drugs in India. This initiative will protect public health, improve regulatory oversight, and restore trust in the pharmaceutical industry. The National Medicine Verification System is a modern solution to a growing public health issue. By adopting this system, India will position itself as a leader in the global effort to combat counterfeit drugs and ensure the safety of its citizens. Industry Recommendations: Recognizing the challenges posed by decentralized verification, industry bodies such as the Indian Drug Manufacturers Association (IDMA) have advocated for the creation of a central repository. They suggest that the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare establish a centralized portal where manufacturers can upload batch-specific QR code data. Such a system would prevent duplication of QR codes and reduce the circulation of counterfeit drugs. The IDMA highlighted that countries like Russia, the UK, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Poland, and the US have implemented similar repositories to enhance drug traceability and authenticity.
